What an automotive locksmith actually does

An automotive locksmith is the person you call when the dealer is the slow, expensive option and the tow truck is unnecessary. Most of what we handle falls into a small number of buckets: replacing keys after they get lost, programming new fobs, repairing ignitions that won't turn, and opening cars that are locked with the keys inside.

Modern vehicles do not use simple metal keys anymore. A "car key" is usually a transponder — a chip in the plastic head that talks to a coil around the ignition. A smart key is a step further: it stays in your pocket, and a separate proximity antenna unlocks and starts the car. We have the diagnostic tools and the chip-programming hardware for both, plus the older mechanical key cutting equipment for vehicles built before the early 2000s.

The reason this matters in Savannah specifically is that the dealer route — towing the car, scheduling a service appointment, paying for the tow plus the dealer key plus shop labor — adds up quickly. Why we work on the vehicle, not in a shop

Almost all automotive locksmith work happens at the car. There is no real reason to tow a vehicle to make a key — the equipment is portable. The exceptions are unusual cases where the immobilizer module needs to be removed and bench-programmed, but that is rare. For the standard lost-key call, we meet you wherever the car is parked and finish on site.
