What goes wrong with ignition cylinders

An ignition cylinder is full of small spring-loaded wafers that have to line up with the cuts on your key. When the wafers wear, the key works inconsistently — sometimes turning, sometimes not. When dust, dirt, or salt get in, the cylinder gets sticky. When the key itself wears down, the same thing happens because the cuts no longer match the wafers exactly.

The fix is usually one of three things: clean and lubricate the cylinder, replace the cylinder, or replace the key. We diagnose at the vehicle and only recommend the level of repair that actually solves the problem.

When the steering wheel is the real problem

If the front wheels are turned hard against a curb and the steering lock has engaged, the ignition will not turn even with a perfect key. This is not a locksmith problem. We will tell you straight if that is what is happening — wiggle the wheel back and forth while you turn the key, and the lock should release.

When the column or the immobilizer is the problem

Sometimes the ignition cylinder itself is fine, but the electrical switch behind it has failed, or the immobilizer module has stopped recognizing the key. These are different problems with different fixes. We test before recommending a new cylinder so you do not pay for the wrong repair.
