What rekeying actually is

Inside every pin tumbler lock are a set of small spring-loaded pins. The cuts on your key push those pins to specific heights — when they all line up at the right level, the cylinder turns. Rekeying means pulling the cylinder, replacing the pins with a different combination, and cutting a new key that matches. The lock looks identical from the outside. The old key no longer works.

For most quality residential locks, this is a 10-to-20-minute job per cylinder. We rekey at your door, you keep the same hardware, and you walk away with a new set of keys. There is no reason to replace working hardware just to get new keys.

When rekey is the right call

You bought a house. You took over a rental. You had a roommate move out. You lost a single key and do not know who has the spare. You hired and then fired a contractor who had your house key. You ran an Airbnb for a season and want a clean reset. All of these are textbook rekey situations.

When replacement makes more sense

If your locks are visibly corroded, the cylinder rotates loosely in the housing, the deadbolt no longer latches firmly, or you have low-grade hardware that you would not want on an exterior door anyway, replacement is the better answer. Rekeying a $20 builder-grade deadbolt is fine but does not address the fact that the lock itself is the weak link. We will tell you straight.
